121 Persuasive Techniques to Influence People

,
MAKING MUSIC BEATS :

All of us live different lives and there may be some of you out there who go into battle each and every day within your own society. For that reason, I created a list of all the known persuasion techniques that master persuaders use to influence people and get what they want.

121 Persuasive Techniques to Influence People

Nevertheless, please take note that with great power comes great responsibility. Always use your knowledge for the benefit of everyone and not just your own. Do you get that, Spidey?

How To Make People Cooperate

1. Humor - If you can make people laugh, you make them feel good. This allows you to easily establish a relationship with them.

2. Smile - First impressions last, and first impressions created with a smile is definitely an advantage. Try smiling at every person you come across the street and you'll see what I mean.

3. Respect - We all know that respect is earned and not given. However, you should always give respect, initially, to any person you meet. It's always easy to do a favor for someone who shows you respect.

4. Build instant rapport - People who can create rapport instantly with anyone has more friends and can establish good relationships than those who can't.

5. Use body language - Understanding body language is part of the plan. Our everyday communication is 55% body language. Although you get the signals unconsciously from the people you talk to, knowing how to consciously recognize these signals is a plus in the art of persuasion.

6. The Halo Effect - We usually categorize people as generally good or generally bad. Any trait that you show to a person in the future can be influenced by what you show today. Make sure that anyone you meet today will get the impression that you are generally good.

7. Similarity - Birds of the same feather, flock together, don't they? If you can always find a way to immediately learn what's similar between you and the other person, you can easily create a bond. This bond will eventually develop into trust which is always what you need to get people to do something for you.

8. Goodwill - Always be genuine when showing interest in other people. Being sincere about your concern for other people will make them like you quicker.

9. Bonding - People's names sound like jingle bells to their ears. Call people by their names and they will give you more attention.

The Mirroring and Matching Techniques

10. Mirror their language - Mirroring is a technique used in neuro-linguistic programming to unconsciously establish rapport with a person. Using the same kind of language that the other person is using can help you build that rapport in no time at all.

11. Match their breathing - Breathing alone can help you establish rapport that you will use in persuasion. The effectiveness of this technique relies on its concealment. Who will ever notice that someone is trying to copy their breathing pattern anyway?

12. Match their voice - Matching a person's voice works on the unconscious level as all of the mirroring techniques you see here.

13. Mirror their moods - When a friend of yours is in a bad mood, do you approach them with a joke? Of course not. Always determine people's mood before you try and make them do what you want.

14. Match their energy level - A person's energy level will give you an indication of how prone they are to suggestions. If you can be as happy or lively as they are, it may be much easier for you to lead them toward your plan.

Applying Cognitive Dissonance

15. Create commitments - If you can get people to commit, it is more likely for that person to do what you've asked them to do. They will be left with an uncomfortable feeling that will last for a certain time if they do so otherwise.

16. Use written commitments - Written commitments are stronger than verbal agreements. Aside from that, it can serve as some kind of contract between you and the other person.

17. Create public commitments - Even stronger than written commitments are public commitments. Not only will there be a concern about the relationship, the person's reputation is also at stake.

18. Use external incentives - Business people always use incentives for their employees. Although the motivation it provides only lasts for a short period, it still gets the job done.

19. Always make them say "Yes" - This is a kind of conditioning wherein the person's response is matched with the stimulus you provide which, in this case, is your request.

20. Make them give an effort - If you can get people to invest an effort, it's more likely that they will stick to your plans or execute your requests.

21. Create dissonance and offer a solution - If you're planning to make someone feel uncomfortable to get them to do what you want, just make sure to offer a way out.

Creating A Sense Of Obligation

22. Gift giving - How do you feel when someone gives you a gift and you don't have anything to give back? Pretty awful, isn't it? You'll likely say, "Geez, don't have anything for you. Just let me know if you need anything..." Ain't that powerful?

23. Mutual concession - There will be times when someone will try to influence your mind wherein you might feel helpless after realizing you don't agree to what just happened. Don't worry! What the other person does not know is that he/she is just as vulnerable when it's your turn to make them agree to your demand.

24. Give a favor, get one back - Sometimes, people will do things for you whether you like it or not. The problem with this is that it generates a need to reciprocate within the recipient's mind. If you're a generous person who finds happiness in giving favors for other people without expecting anything in return, just make sure you let them know.

25. Sharing secrets - Share a secret to create a bond, a sense of obligation, and a feeling of trust. Just remember, the kinds of secrets you share should depend on the kind of person you're sharing it with.

The Power Of Groupthink

26. Create a group - The larger the group, the better. Humans have a strong need to socialize. People attach themselves to groups to have a sense of belonging. If you want people to conform with your ideals, strengthen the group and make it grow.

27. Make everyone familiar - If you can get people to strongly identify with your group, the easier it will be to influence their behavior. Also make sure that everyone is similar in the way they think.

28. Establish your principles - Companies usually have principles which they package in the form of mission and vision statements. It's important that people within your organization or your group learn to adhere to these principles.

The Law Of Scarcity

29. Illustrate the potential loss - The possibility of losing someone or something may sometimes make us feel that our freedom is being restricted. Sometimes, people act irrational when this happens. When you're offering a product or a service, add a sense of potential loss and see how much difference it makes.

30. Tell them they can't have it - At times it makes you wonder why you'll try everything to get something you can't have. Freedom of choice may have something to do with it.

31. Increase demand; limit the supply - When there's a strong demand for a product or a service, people tend to flock toward it. People are always inclined to purchase that which is in-demand.

32. Create an appeal - To generate interest in you or what you have, create an appeal by making yourself appear special. Surround yourself with good company and fancy objects to attract more people.

33. Show exclusivity - When you try the previous suggestion, you're already making yourself exclusive. People just can't get to you and they have to work their way through obstacles (if you want to call it that). The mere effort of trying to get close to you will give you an assurance that they will do anything to please you.

34. Announce a deadline - Procrastination is your biggest enemy. To make sure that your requests or instructions are executed at the time you expect it to be done, always put up a deadline.

35. Restrict their freedom - A person's desire always influences his/her behavior. Once you tell people that they can't have something, the more they will clamor for it. Believe me, this trick is a favorite amongst presidents.

The Language of Persuasion

36. Use double speak - Avoid using offensive words and substitute them with less offensive ones. For example: use "mentally challenged" instead of "idiot," "communication" instead of "propaganda," "enhanced interrogation" instead of "torture," and so on.

37. Play with numbers - When you are demonstrating something, play around with numbers in your attempt to persuade. Try something like, "close to nine out of ten" or "fewer than five out of every..."

38. Use positive words - What you want is for people to feel confident and comfortable in doing what you want. Hence, use positive words whenever you're trying to communicate.

39. Pack words with emotion - Emotion packed words are extremely useful in making people act. Just look at how George W. Bush used the word "terrorist" in his campaign against enemies of the U.S.

40. Be silent - After closing a deal, the best thing to do is to be silent. The person has already made his choice and you don't want to ruin the whole thing by accidentally giving the other guy contradicting ideas.

41. Paint pictures with words - Isn't it nice to spend some time walking at the park with those lovely trees all over the place, swaying back and forth to the flow of fresh air? You can just feel the rays of the morning sun gently touching your soft skin until, suddenly; you step on a pile of dog poo... (hehe! Just giving you a break. We're not even half-way through the list)

42. Choose the right words - Using the right words can sometimes make a big difference. Instead of saying, "Sir, I'm sure we'll have trouble convincing the staff about your plans." try, "Sir, I'm sure the staff will greatly appreciate it and give you more approval if we try other means."

43. Replace "you" with "let's" - You can get more cooperation from people by replacing "you" with "let's." The phrase "let us" gives a hint of involvement on your part. So let's try using "let's" from now on.

44. Use simple statements - Give your instructions in simple, direct, and brief statements. Not only is it easier to remember, but it is also easier to understand and absorb.

45. Use everyday language - Complicated language will only confuse your listeners and/or your readers. Sure you got an enormous vocabulary, but if you talk like an intellectually dexterous individual (geek) all the time, it's more likely that you'll just be misinterpreted.

46. Avoid vulgar and curse words - As much as possible, try to avoid using profanity in your statements (especially with new acquaintances). Most of the time, your credibility depends on the kinds of words you use.

47. Avoid jargon and technical language - If the person you're talking to is working in the same field as you are, then there's no problem with this. In most cases, however, you interact with different people. Like I said earlier, just use everyday language.

48. Keep sentences short - In the early centuries, a single sentence can stand as a whole paragraph. Today, we're clearly living in a world where a single word such as "party" is enough to say it all. With that said, "let's" "party."

49. Don't beat around the bush - If you have something to say, say it directly.

50. Use verbs - Action words are more likely to make people move. Keep in mind that the words you say are being imagined by the person you're talking to. Thought precedes movement.

51. Use words that grab attention - Words like FREE, EARN NOW, EASY, SEXY, and GUARANTEED are just few of the numerous attention grabbing words that you can use. Try to EXPERIMENT with these words by adding them in your statements.

52. Emphasize what you want - Take a look at the last sentence above.

53. Pace - Studies have found that speaking faster is more persuasive than speaking in a slow and monotonous way.

54. Avoid vocal fillers - What this means is that... uhm... well... to make... uhm... your ideas accepted... er... don't use these kinds of words when speaking.

55. Determine your pitch - Adjusting the pitch of your voice by making it lower is proven to be more effective in persuasive speech.

56. Adjust your volume - Always speak loud enough so that people can hear you. If you're speaking in front of a crowd, test the sound system first to ensure that your audience will not end up being deaf after your presentation.

57. Be more articulate - Ideas that are communicated in a smooth flow and a coherent way adds more credibility. People are more likely to act on your requests or instructions when they are able to fully understand what you're trying to say.

58. Take some time to pause - Emphasis does not necessarily mean you should only speak louder, more fluently, in a low voice, and so on. There are times when you need to pause so that people will have time to absorb what you just said.

Distinction and Contrast

59. Triple the value - If you are selling a product, people are more likely to buy it when they see an extra value. Whatever you are selling, try adding a discount, bonus products, a warranty, or anything else that will give the impression of a good deal.

60. Change their perspective - When you talk to a salesperson, try to observe how they breakdown the price of what they are selling into ridiculously small easy monthly payments. This is called reframing.

61. Shift their focus - This is a technique used by advertisers to put your attention on the "lighter" side of the picture. Is the glass half full or is it half empty? Is it bad for your purse or is it good for your health?

62. The Door-In-The Face - Make an initially huge request that has a possibility of being turned down. After getting the response, make another request that is reasonable for the other person.

63. Use Comparison - Another technique used in advertising. I'm sure you see a lot of this on television. You compare your product or request to something similar but undesirable in order to get the person to agree with you.

64. Start high with your request - When asking for a request, try to make your way through in getting a "yes" by starting off high. Large request usually get a "no" so make sure before you get down to the real request, ask for something bigger first.

65. Use the right timing - In order for the previous technique to be effective, always state your real request immediately after the earlier ones.

66. Take note of the situation - Are you in the office, in class, in a party, inside a church, or inside a bar? Different places have different moods. Be aware of the situation to be able to match the person's mood.

The Power of Suggestion

67. Expect to affect - Expectation is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Did you know that you can affect people's behavior just by showing them your expectations?

68. Consider it done! - You've probably heard this before. However, you're not supposed to be the one to say this. Whenever you send out instructions, just imagine the other person uttering these words to give strength to your unconscious signals.

69. Use persuasive suggestions - Doctors are not the only ones who can use the placebo effect. You can actually use the same principle to make people do what you want them to do.

70. Emphasize the time - What time is it? Well, it's time for you to make people do what you want instead of the other way around. Did you get the point?

71. Use their reputation - Most people strongly identify themselves with their reputation. "Boss, I know you're a generous guy. How about giving me a raise?"

72. Use embedded commands - Here's an example of an embedded command: "You can try this one right away after you finish this article. (Embedded command: "try this one right away")

73. Pacing and leading - Make the person feel comfortable and in agreement with you then try to move them in the direction that you want.

Getting People Involved

74. Increase their participation - The more a person is involved in what you are doing, the more likely it is for that person to feel connected with you.

75. Use role-playing - Celebrities often experience difficulty getting out of their roles. Pretending is an easy way to change your beliefs. Make people pretend and you'll be able to tap into their unconscious mind.

76. Ask for people's advice - Another way to get people involved is by asking for their advice. Some will even teach you how to do it the right way.

77. The Visualization technique - People who sell cars will offer a test-ride to a potential buyer. Surely, if you can visualize yourself riding a car more vividly, you're more inclined to buy.

78. Keep human contact - If you own a store, approaching your customers and making a conversation with a friendly touch is more likely to make a sale than just hanging around near your cash deposit box.

79. Create an atmosphere - Visual appeal, aroma, and music are used by many types of business establishments to create an atmosphere and to attract more customers.

80. Create tension - If there's tension, there has to be a release. Just like the plot in a movie or a novel, create tension then offer a resolution at the end.

81. Allow hands-on experience - Computer software companies release Beta versions of their products not only to test it, but to make consumers actually purchase the final version.

82. Learn how to handle objections - Let's face it. You won't be able to get people to agree with you all the time, but if you know how to handle objections, then they won't be able to escape your charm.

83. Tell mesmerizing stories - If you have the ability to tell interesting stories to your listeners or your readers, the more likely people will give you attention and the chance to persuade.

84. Use repetition - Advertisers know that a single exposure of their brand on television is not enough. That's why they continuously show the product to push it deeper inside your mind. You should do the same thing with your ideas. Push it deeper inside other people's minds.

85. Repackage your message - You can use repetition, but you don't want people to take you or your ideas for granted. Learn how to repackage your message just like how companies repackage their products.

86. Build suspense - Isn't it annoying to leave something unfinished? How about seeing that "to be continued..." message on the television series you're watching? Indeed, it keeps people coming back for more.

87. Build a competition - In order to make people loyal to your brand or to your group, there must be a competition. Create an atmosphere of "them" versus "us."

88. Engage the five senses - What enters our mind passes through our five senses. When persuading other people, try to stimulate the five senses as much as you can through the methods mentioned earlier.

Getting People's Attention

89. Present new and innovative ideas - If you know how to repeat and repackage, you should also offer something new from time to time. There are more choices today than there were before. They can leave you easily when they find something better. Don't give them the chance to do so.

90. Use quotes - "The real persuaders are our appetites, our fears and above all our vanity. The skillful propagandist stirs and coaches these internal persuaders." - Eric Hoffer (July 25, 1902 - May 21, 1983)

91. Make shocking statements - Just watch the primetime news and you'll learn how to do this in no time.

92. Give relevant examples - I think I'll leave this one alone.

93. Give shortcuts and tips - People want and need things that will make their life easier. We've all had it with this game we call life. Why not share something that is beneficial for all.

94. Learn the art of questioning - Indeed, questioning is an art. If you know how to use it well, you can enter other people's minds easily. Try these questioning techniques.

95. Make them ask - You're not the only one who should ask questions. When people don't ask, that means they are not interested. Do you have any questions?

How To Use Flattery

96. Favoritism at its finest - Favoritism in the workplace is definitely undesirable. So make everyone, in any place, your favorite and you are sure to get them to do things for you.

97. Challenge the person's ego - Do you have the guts to try out everything you've read here? Let's see!

98. Don't react; just respond - Persuasion is not about you. It's all about your purpose, and your purpose is to influence other people. Failure is sometimes inevitable, but once you've learned your lesson, brush it off and move on.

99. Make them feel important - Hitting on people's self-esteem by making them feel important is a very effective technique in persuasion. Give them a supply of importance; they'll give you a supply of favors.

100. Learn how to praise - Aside from making them "feel" important, it is also necessary that you tell people directly what you find nice about them.

101. Show appreciation - Every effort made from the other person's part should be responded to with gratitude and appreciation.

How To Use Association

102. Use endorsements - You don't always need to work alone. Persuasion also involves the help of other people. Companies rely on famous celebrities to endorse their products. If you know people with good reputations, find out how you can capitalize on your relationship with them.

103. Use the Anchor technique - Study how to tap emotions and experiences of events, places, and things inside other people's mind by using the anchor technique. The right kind of stimulus at the right setting is proven to be an effective persuasion tool.

104. Use signs and symbols - You see these everywhere. Just look around your room and see how many signs and symbols you can identify. If you want to take this seriously, you can try studying semiotics.

105. Associate positive experience - Salespeople take their clients out to lunch or dinner. Other businessmen do the same. Why? So that they can be remembered. It's just like taking your girlfriend out on a first date.

106. Use sponsorship - Many companies sponsor various events to make positive associations. If you watch sports, take a look at the banners all over the venue and try to distinguish which companies they represent.

107. Produce lasting images - Well-known personalities use different kinds of images to project the kind of qualities they want people to perceive. Have you ever tried wearing a bling-bling?

108. Make use of colors - There are many different meanings of colors. If you know what each color represents, you can use this knowledge to elicit a certain mood or feeling. Speaking of feelings, let's try to find out how to use them.

Using Emotions To Take Them Over

109. Envy - Envy is what a person feels when he perceives in himself a lack of other people's qualities, accomplishments, or material possession. Making others feel envy, however, is undesirable, but is still an effective persuasion technique.

110. Worry - Persuasion may be ineffective if the person you're trying to persuade is worried about something. Help the person get back to reality first by using positive and affirming words before applying any of the techniques here.

111. Fear - Fear is commonly used as a marketing strategy, but you can also persuade people by invoking fear with the use of your words.

112. Anger - Someone who is angry may be someone who wants attention. You just need to know how to diffuse the person's anger when it's time for you to persuade.

113. Sympathy - You see this being used a lot of times on television. Starving children, tortured animals, war victims, and so on. When people feel sympathy towards something, they are more willing to help.

114. Jealousy - Jealousy is what you feel when you see other's possessing something that you don't want them to have. There's a good chance that you can persuade a person who is jealous.

115. Shame - When people do something they regret, they may or may not be motivated to make up for their mistakes. If they still see a little bit of hope, help them get up.

116. Pity - Pity is what you feel for people who have been treated unjustly or have experienced some unfortunate events in their lives.

Using Facts and Figures

117. Cite empirical studies - People are more inclined to believe your claim if you back it up with scientific evidence. Sometimes, just adding the words "scientific findings have proven..." in your words can already make a big difference.

118. Gather testimony - There's a reason why we look at product reviews, movie reviews, book reviews, and so on. The more testimonies you can get, the more you add to the appeal of your product or claim.

119. Use statistics - Graphs, charts, statistical data, etc. All of these have numbers that will help you provide stronger evidence to your listeners or readers.

120. Create an analogy - You can sometimes go on explaining something for a long time, but people may still not be able to understand. Using analogies is just like making people watch a theatrical version of a novel.

121. Show published reports - If it's documented or published on a newspaper, then you can use it to support your claim.

Music Beat Maker Software - The Basics Make the Music

,
MAKING MUSIC BEATS :

A music beat maker is going to have a few things going for it that separate it from a virtual drum-machine or traditional software beat maker. The most essential difference is that it is going to allow a song-writer to produce an entire song from beginning to end. This usually means that the samples will also have to be more expansive. More samples and sounds will be necessary as well as at least 16-tracks. Beyond this, there may be a virtual drum-pad and there should also be a virtual piano set.

Music Beat Maker Software - The Basics Make the Music

The piano set would be used to add the bass-lines, guitar parts, vocal elements and synthesizer sounds; essentially everything that doesn't sound like a percussion instrument. The idea behind a music beat maker is that it will allow a song-writer to drop a nice beat and then have enough tracks and samples left over to add a hook. A hook is the part of the song that keeps the listener listening. Every great song has a great hook.

There are a few things every beat maker should have, so for the purposes of this article, these elements will be discussed now. For one thing, a beat maker should have a 16-track sequencer. Whether or not the tracks can be bounced onto one of the tracks is not as important as making sure there are 16-tracks available. 8-track sequencers simply do not give the song-writer enough options and may be okay if you are just looking for a quick and simple beat but lack the desired effect when you want to add a hook or produce an entire song from scratch.

You will also want each track to have its own volume control. This is pretty obvious, but make sure that you try out the samples and the volume control on each track before you purchase the music beat maker. You don't want to end up with a music beat maker that does not give the sneer, bass-drum etc. the exact tone you are looking for.

You will also want to have control over the beats-per-minute or BPM. This stands for how many beats are played each minute, so for a song that is set at 100 BPM, 100 beats are 'completed' per minute. This does not mean you should use every beat (silence is golden) but it is the standard for determining the tempo of the song. Just make sure you have control over it.

Last but not least you will want to have an easy export option in your music beat maker. At the very least you will want the beat maker to export to mp3 with the click of a button, and the more export file options available the better. Most software beat makers today will have this option, and that would include music beat makers as well.

To re-cap, the four ingredients you will want to have on your music beat maker at the bare minimum are:

- 16-track sequencer (not an 8-track sequencer)

- Individual volume control (for each of the 16 tracks)

- BPM Control (to control the tempo of the song)

- Easy Export Option (at least exportable to mp3 so you can burn the song or upload it etc.)

Just remember to try out as many music beat makers as possible by downloading 'free' versions on your computer. This way you will have a good idea about what you like and don't like and then you can choose accordingly. The price of beat makers has gone down so much in the last few years that you can probably spend well under 0 and be pretty happy with the purchase and the beats you make. Good luck and happy beat making.

Beginning Blues Guitar - What Is the Ragtime Blues and Why Is It the Best To Play?

,
MAKING MUSIC BEATS :

Beginning blues guitar students must learn that blues music is far more complex than it seems. This is why it is important to choose a specific blues style and pattern your music after it. One of the specific styles recommended by blues experts is the ragtime blues. To find out why it is the best blues style to play, you can find out more details below.

Beginning Blues Guitar - What Is the Ragtime Blues and Why Is It the Best To Play?

What is Ragtime Blues?
When it comes to producing blues music, even the smallest details that musicians include could go a long way. This is a lesson that many have learned from the so-called blues guitar master, Gary Davis. Several musicians who wanted to learn more about blues music included Gary Davis and ragtime blues in their study, which has led to a great deal of success.

One of his songs in particular, Candy Man, is recognized as one of the best examples of ragtime blues music. When he is playing this song with his guitar, Gary Davis uses only one finger and his thumb when picking the guitar. However, this is just a glimpse into the techniques that practitioners of ragtime blues use to produce their own song.

Gary Davis: Ragtime Blues Master
Gary Davis made a name for himself by mastering the ragtime blues style. Those with an ear for blues music will easily recognize his songs due to their complexity and diversity of musical elements. It is quite impressive how Davis managed to preserve his skills despite all these years. Unlike other blues musicians, he took a break from playing but he never fully let go of playing blues. Instead, he started again after re-discovering his blues skills and has managed to become really successful throughout his musical career. He showcased his style by making records and performing in live gigs. He also managed to pass on his techniques to other aspiring blues musicians including Stephan Grossman.

Learning Davis' Techniques
Gary Davis uses only two fingers to pick on his blues guitar: his thumb and forefinger. And yet, these two are able to produce a wonderfully rich sound. This forefinger naturally moves quickly and is independent of his thumb's movements. He also uses picks instead of his bare fingers because it is far more accurate in producing the desired sound. Another crucial component that makes Davis' ragtime blues music stand out from others is the thumb beat timing. You must also be quick in moving your thumb such that you can easily switch treble strings to create the illusion that more than two fingers are used at the same time.

Allure of Ragtime Blues Music Until Today
The classic Candy Man song from Gary Davis is something that will forever be embedded into the history of blues music. It is one of the perfect examples of ragtime blues music, as far as structure goes. You can therefore follow the patterns of this song or some of Gary Davis' musical patterns in general to replicate his own musical style. Another important tip to consider for beginning blues guitar students is to have fun. Learn to enjoy this process and take it easy. If you can begin by enjoying the music itself, then you will find it easier to learn and develop enthusiasm into the learning process.

The Three Legs Of Persuasion

,
MAKING MUSIC BEATS :

If you have heard me talk about leadership at all, you will know that I have a very simple definition of Leadership. Leadership is simply: Influence. That's it. Simple. When you lead, you influence. To lead others is to influence them through various means to follow you to your vision of a preferred thought, belief or action.

The Three Legs Of Persuasion

One of the key ways to do so is to increase your ability to persuade people.
Now, at first glance you may do as many do and think of persuasion as simply a verbal plea or argument (in the positive sense of the word) that seeks to change someone's mind. I want to focus in on what I believe to be a much more well rounded view of persuasion, one that has been around for many hundreds of years, and which, when applied, will increase your ability to persuade others, or influence them.

My basic points for this article are found from Aristotle's "The Rhetoric." They are what I call the "Three Legs of Persuasion." Together they enable us to fully persuade people. Miss any of the three legs and it is like trying to sit on a three-legged stool that is missing one leg!

What are the three legs? They are:

Logos, or Logic

Pathos, or Passion

Ethos, or Ethics

Let's start with the two that are most prevalent, Logic and Passion, and end with what I consider to be the most important, Ethics. In order to master the art of persuasion, you must have:

1. Logic. Your vision must make sense to the person who is following you (or the one you are trying to get to follow you!). How is this done? Vision. Do you have a vision of where it is that you want to go? Do you have the destination in mind? If you want people to follow you, you need to have a vision, an end result that you are targeting.

Clarity. Is the vision clear? Can it be articulated clearly? Is it simple enough to grasp? Does it make sense?

Communication. Can you communicate your vision so that it is understandable and compelling? Do you communicate it regularly so that the logic of it sinks in?

Strategy. The strategy for getting to your destination must be logical for your followers. Does it make sense for them to follow you on the journey of your vision for your organization? A well-thought out strategy for getting to your vision is a must.

2. Passion. People underestimate the principle of passion. Today more than ever, this element of being passionate about your vision is paramount to the idea of persuasion.

As we leave the modern era and move into what sociologists are calling the "post-modern" era, people are going to be persuaded less by logic and reason than they are passion. We live in a video age that uses images and music to move people more than sense and reason. For example, think about how basketball shoes are sold today. The ads don't say, "These shoes are made from the finest rubber and leather and will sustain the shock of x amount of pounds of pressure, etc, etc." No, today shoes are sold by showing basketball players dribbling the ball to a methodical beat. Image. Passion.

So do we throw out logic? Certainly not, but we understand that the passion we demonstrate is extremely important. Probably more important than logic and increasingly so in the years to come.

Are you passionate about your vision? Does that come through when you speak about it? Does it come through in the materials that you distribute to support your vision?

People want to know that you are passionate about your vision. If you aren't passionate about it, then why should they be? Your vision must be passionately compelling. After all, you are asking them to put themselves on the line, to give it all to get the group to the vision. It takes a passionate person to move a group toward a vision. And the bigger the vision, the more passion you need to get there!

3. Ethics. This is what I believe to be the most important aspect of these three legs of persuasion. Ethics. Integrity. Character. However you want to say it, people look at you and are constantly judging your character.

You may have tremendous skills. You may have all the logic in the world and passion to fill a sporting arena, but if your followers see a crack in your character, they will run for the hills. Now don't get me wrong. I am not talking about mistakes. Followers will allow for mistakes. But they will not allow for poor character.

I know what you must be thinking: Wait a minute. We have all sorts of leaders with poor character - just look at the politicians! A few thoughts on that very good question:

Many of the people we think have poor character have many others (and in a politician's case, they just need 51%) who think their character is fine, or at least sufficient. So for some the question of ethics has been answered, just differently than we would answer it. For example, polls show that most people think that politicians are unethical and corrupt in general. But when polled on their own representative, they answer that that person is just fine, thank you very much.

Secondly, we have seen that very talented leaders are eventually undone by their lack of character, or at least thwarted in their goals of leadership. Let's take Bill Clinton for example. What do we know about him? What would most people agree upon?

For one, he is smart, a Rhode's scholar. For another, he is talented. Still more, he is passionate and driven. He is winsome and gregarious. We also know that he had a few "character problems."

"But he was re-elected," you may point out. True, but he didn't accomplish what he wanted to because he was answering the question of his character all of the time. And beyond that, many people who were big supporters of his ended up realizing that they could have someone else who would provide leadership without the sideshow, and they abandoned him in droves by the end.

To his major detractors, Bill Clinton was an example of a person who lacked the character to lead. To his supporters he has become a caricature of lost opportunity because of the issues of character. Now, I do not intend to turn this article into a discussion of politics, but I use Clinton as an example of how people who are both opposed as well as sympathetic to him and his vision can agree that character questions were his undoing.

Where does this leave us? Hopefully you aren't dealing with the kind of issues we have seen in our political process lately, but you should be asking yourself what your character is like.

Am I honest? Am I who I say I am? Do I do what is right? Am I responsible? Am I the same behind closed doors as I am in public? Am I a person of integrity? These are the most important questions. The way your followers answer them about you will determine to what degree they follow you. Will people follow you if your character is less than stellar? Maybe. But all other things being the same, a strong character will put you over the top.

Logic, passion and ethics are the three legs of persuasion. Become a person with a vision that is logical and well thought out, combine that with a passionate pursuit, and you are well on your way to persuading people and achieving the goal for your organization. The key will be what kind of character you have. If you develop a fine, strong character, with high personal ethics, you will have all three legs of persuasion - and you will become an Extraordinary Leader!

Not On My Watch - Observations On Oversight

,
MAKING MUSIC BEATS :

After more than 40 years of wandering in the vast wasteland, some parents have decided to make the TV set a controlled substance in their homes. I am one of them.

Not On My Watch - Observations On Oversight

But it's a workout. Pulling the average American child away from just a few of their 1,680 minutes of weekly television viewing burns as many calories as one Pilates session.

And since the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends limiting children's television viewing to two hours of quality programming a day, parents get hit head on with more headaches:

I limited TV viewing to one hour for my children on the week days, and I didn't let them watch certain inappropriate shows. I kept a large selection of kid-tested, mother-approved videos and DVDs on hand as an alternative to poor programming. They complained, envied their friends' freedoms and to this day, that epic of family history is retold with the bitterness of slavery.

One of their favorite approved movies was the 1956 version of "The Ten Commandments" with Charlton Heston when he was hot. (Holy Moses, Cecil B. DeMille knew how to deliver a savior.)

The kids still repeat lines from that movie. Many a time I've asked for a favor only to hear, "You've croaked your last time, old frog." (The beautiful princess of Egypt delivers this line just before she pushes her faithful servant out the window.)

And careful selection of your own TV viewing material isn't always safe. My kids knew Ramses as the King of Egypt. My daughter's eye caught an adult product behind the prescription counter with the same moniker.

"Mommy, what are those things named after the King of Egypt?"

"They're for big people."

"But what are they used for?"

"Uh, huh. Yes... Would you like some candy? Look at those toys over there. Did I tell you we're going to Disneyland when you graduate from high school?"

When I asked if the pharmacist if her medicine had to be taken with food he answered, "So it is written." We made a quick exodus.

Of course there were the days when my viewing laws were looser. Weekends, sick days, and on special events I allowed extra tube time. More program choices were added as the children got older.

To further safeguard against raising a chain of fools, I subjected my little subjects to the rigors of trips to museums and places of interest. They treated me like I had the plague, but with the promise of a stop to the Gift Shop, they soon they were soon engaged in learning, whether they knew it or not.

These "trips" made for a lot of clutter but surprisingly, the historical knick knacks came in handy for school projects. I once tried to talk my son into using his set of Civil War soldiers on his sister's volcano but he wouldn't go for it. He played with them on the floor for years. My husband has a permanent impression of a canon on his left foot.

As a result of my cruel supervision, my captive audience developed an appreciation for all types of music, large vocabularies from exposure to the classics, know more historical facts than most adults, saving them from any possible shameful appearance on Leno's Jaywalking segments, and they can beat anyone in Disney Trivia. (It's important to be well rounded.)

But what do the children think of my masterful guidance?

After taking her SATs and joking that she knew some words on the test because of the "selected" movies she watched as a kid, my daughter remarked, "It's almost like Mom thought about it." Doh!

The Pros and Cons of Early Learning

,
MAKING MUSIC BEATS :

There are no rules when it comes to teaching your baby. Well, okay, maybe just one rule: make sure to keep it fun. Better not to teach anything than to bring stress to your relationship, whether through the preparation you impose on yourself or the discipline you impose on your child.

The Pros and Cons of Early Learning

There is another important issue that hampers parents otherwise interested in teaching their babies - and that is doubt about the benefits or appropriateness of early learning programs. There are plenty of critics out there, many of them with some valid points to make. Some have written books on the subject; others may be members of your family. We'd like to address the points they may make here.

A highly personal decision

It's one thing to have someone tell you that teaching babies is wonderful. But you really need to come to an opinion for yourself. You need to know all the facts and the arguments for and against in order to reach a reasoned conclusion.

There's so much information out there, and as working parents, we don't always have time to read all of it. This article summarizes the main arguments against early learning and links to fuller articles, in case you want to find out more.

So what are the arguments against early learning? They basically fall into one of three categories:

"Whatever you're trying to teach can't be taught"

The baby or small child you want to teach is too young to learn the subject you want to teach because her brain is not sufficiently developed to handle it.

"You will harm the child you're trying to teach"

You should let babies be babies - and not interfere with the "natural" pace of development - otherwise, you will only cause harm.

"You can go ahead and teach, but it's ultimately pointless"

Sure, the child you're teaching may learn something now, but a few years down the line, there won't be anything to show for it.

Here's a summary of our response to the three main arguments against early learning:

"Whatever you're trying to teach can't be taught"

They tell us it can't be done, but there are countless young children out there already doing it - whether it's reading, solving math equations or playing a musical instrument like a pro.

"You will harm the child you're trying to teach"

It's all a question of balance. The critics assume that teaching involves coercion and that it takes up the majority of a child's time. In fact, all the experts emphasize the importance of keeping lessons fun and free from pressure, as babies and young children naturally love to learn.

The critics believe it must be necessary to force a child to learn reading or math because they can remember loathing similar classes in school. However, it is our view that waiting too long to start teaching is what causes the problem. As children get older, they find learning any new skill increasingly difficult - and tiresome. With her growing independence, there is so much more to occupy a school-age child than there is to occupy a baby.

Whereas you may find it a struggle to get your five- or six-year-old to concentrate on reading or math, you might be surprised to see just how enthralled your baby is at his lessons. For a person who is dependent on others for every little thing, the stimulation that comes from being introduced to words and numbers is hard to beat. Babies have even been known to kick their legs, pant and squeal with delight in response to their lessons.

So whereas lessons at school can be painful affairs, learning in infancy is effortless. And unlike in school, where certain things have to be learned within a certain timeframe - like it or not - a baby's lessons only proceed when the child is in a receptive mood.

"You can go ahead and teach, but it's ultimately pointless"

In fact, longitudinal studies have shown that early readers maintain their advantage through grade school. As for math, children have learned to perform equations that most adults will never manage to do without a calculator. When it comes to music, nearly all of the world's great composers and performers took up their instrument in early childhood.

We are compiling a list of books, essays and articles presenting views for and against various aspects of baby education and early learning. If you come across anything that you think should be on our list, please let us know at the forums.

Music Playing for Beginners

,
MAKING MUSIC BEATS :

Many of us adults, and children too, are fascinated when we hear music, or when we watch music being played, whether its a music video, concert, or at an event. Music has the power to captivate us, excite us, and even to make our sometimes not so good days better. We watch in awe and in a bit of jealousy as the drummer or guitarist play the beautiful or exciting melody that has our senses flying. You think to yourself; I wish I would to be able to play like that, not for the fame, but for myself, for the feeling of freedom and relaxation, for the outlet.

Music Playing for Beginners

But too often we get discouraged trying to play music because the tone just does not come out right. We feel like a failure and that we'll never get there anyway, so why even try. This is probably the single greatest misconception when it comes to playing music. More often than not, this setback is not due to our lack of musical capabilities, but rather due to the fact that the instrument we have chosen might just be too much for the beginner.

The most important key to remember when starting your path in your musical journey is that there are two types of musical instruments. There are what is called "step-by-step" instruments and there are "complex" instruments. That is to say, step by step instruments, also called SBS instruments, are instruments where all that is really needed to be able to play them is the simple ability to play a beat. Almost anybody can play a beat with their hands on a table, or follow along hand clapping at a concert. A typical SBS instrument would be a bongo or the drums. All that is needed is a basic ear for music (which most people have) and some practice. As you drum, your' musical ear' will know when you played on beat and when you veer off a bit, but the instrument itself is pretty basic. The same can be said with a Keyboard, Piano, or Acoustic Guitar.

Complex instruments are for example an electric guitar or violin. Even someone with a great 'ear' for music will have some level of difficulty with these instruments because besides learning how to play these instruments, they also require a deeper knowledge in the instrument itself which can be difficult and disparaging for the beginner.

This is not to say that you should give up your dream of playing the violin, with a good attitude and a bit of hard work you'll be able to play any instrument you wish, but for those of us who would like a more easier route, or for any child, starting your musical ambitions with a SBS instrument will get you to your goals sooner. If you would like more information about SBS instruments, may I suggest to you http://www.kidzbeats.com, a website that is devoted to helping people reach their Musical goals.

Get Down and Dance in the Desire Resort

,
MAKING MUSIC BEATS :

What could be more Mexican than a good dance? Before you visit the Desire Resort, you may just want to get on your dancing shoes and put yourself through your paces, but what sorts of dances are you likely to see in Mexico?

Get Down and Dance in the Desire Resort

The Salsa
This fast and feisty dance might have originated in Cuba, but that has not stopped the Mexicans from adopting it and making it their own. The deep afro-Caribbean beats and sexy nature of this dance make it a popular favourite at the Desire Resort so make sure you find yourself a partner to strut your stuff with. The word 'salsa' having connotations to the American Spanish word for 'sauce', this 4-beat dance is one that you won't be able to resist getting up for. So let the infectious music carry you onto the dance floor as you salsa your way into the sunshine.

Mexican Folk Dance
If you're most intrigued by the traditional aspects of Mexico, then you'll particularly enjoy the displays of folk dancing that you'll see during your visit. Showcasing a number of the cultural influences that have seeped into Mexican ways of life over many years, Mexican folk dance incorporates both indigenous and Spanish/European style steps in a beautiful and energetic form of dance. Rich colours and costumes serve to make the dancing even more exciting for those in the audience, as they watch the dancers in what is really a representation of the trials, tribulations and celebrations of the Mexican way of life. Whether these folk dances are being performed for religious or community reasons, or even for entertainment within the Desire Resort, you cannot fail to be captivated by the rapid and rapturous nature of these dances. And if the steps really make an impression on you then there's no reason why you can't have a go at picking up from yourself though due to the nature of this dance you may need to find a patient partner.

The Mexican Hat Dance
The Mexican hat dance, referred to colloquially as Jarabe Tapatio is known by many as the national dance of Mexico. It was first performed in the early twentieth century for a celebration marking the end of the Mexican revolution and is seen today as a symbol of pride and honour amongst the Mexican people. The dance can be performed by a pair, or by a group of couples, and it tells a story of courtship and devotion. Within the story a man dressed in the traditional suit of a charro attempts to initiate a relationship with la china. Throughout the beginning of the dance, the charro attempts to secure the heart of his maiden with a show of bravado and stamping and tapping. However, just as she begins to fall for his charms, he becomes inebriated with his success and is sent away as a drunk. By the end of the dance however, he has been successful and the dance is concluded with a triumphant march which is often ended with a feigned kiss hidden behind a sombrero. The Mexican hat dance is considered something of a national treasure and is one dance that you should definitely make sure you see during your time at the Desire Resort. And if you want to have a go yourself? Well there are plenty of videos on YouTube that will show you the steps!

So, if you're thinking of getting your dancing shoes out during your time at the Desire resort, then you've got plenty to look forward to! With so much energy, colour and vivacity, the dances of Mexico are quite a sight to behold, and a great deal of fun to attempt.

Music & Emotions: Can Music Really Make You a Happier Person?

,
MAKING MUSIC BEATS :

How many times have you turned to music to uplift you even further in happy times, or sought the comfort of music when melancholy strikes?

Music & Emotions: Can Music Really Make You a Happier Person?

Music affects us all. But only in recent times have scientists sought to explain and quantify the way music impacts us at an emotional level. Researching the links between melody and the mind indicates that listening to and playing music actually can alter how our brains, and therefore our bodies, function.

It seems that the healing power of music, over body and spirit, is only just starting to be understood, even though music therapy is not new. For many years therapists have been advocating the use of music - both listening and study - for the reduction of anxiety and stress, the relief of pain. And music has also been recommended as an aid for positive change in mood and emotional states.

Michael DeBakey, who in 1966 became the first surgeon to successfully implant an artificial heart, is on record saying: "Creating and performing music promotes self-expression and provides self-gratification while giving pleasure to others. In medicine, increasing published reports demonstrate that music has a healing effect on patients."

Doctors now believe using music therapy in hospitals and nursing homes not only makes people feel better, but also makes them heal faster. And across the nation, medical experts are beginning to apply the new revelations about music's impact on the brain to treating patients.

In one study, researcher Michael Thaut and his team detailed how victims of stroke, cerebral palsy and Parkinson's disease who worked to music took bigger, more balanced strides than those whose therapy had no accompaniment.

Other researchers have found the sound of drums may influence how bodies work. Quoted in a 2001 article in USA Today, Suzanne Hasner, chairwoman of the music therapy department at Berklee College of Music in Boston, says even those with dementia or head injuries retain musical ability.

The article reported results of an experiment in which researchers from the Mind-Body Wellness Center in Meadville, Pa., tracked 111 cancer patients who played drums for 30 minutes a day. They found strengthened immune systems and increased levels of cancer-fighting cells in many of the patients.

"Deep in our long-term memory is this rehearsed music," Hasner says. "It is processed in the emotional part of the brain, the amygdala. Here's where you remember the music played at your wedding, the music of your first love, that first dance. Such things can still be remembered even in people with progressive diseases. It can be a window, a way to reach them..."

The American Music Therapy Organization claims music therapy may allow for "emotional intimacy with families and caregivers, relaxation for the entire family, and meaningful time spent together in a positive, creative way".

Scientists have been making progress in its exploration into why music should have this effect. In 2001 Dr. Anne Blood and Robert Zatorre of McGill University in Montreal, used positron emission tomography, or PET scans, to find out if particular brain structures were stimulated by music.

In their study, Blood and Zatorre asked 10 musicians, five men and five women, to choose stirring music. The subjects were then given PET scans as they listened to four types of audio stimuli - the selected music, other music, general noise or silence. Each sequence was repeated three times in random order.

Blood said when the subjects heard the music that gave them "chills," the PET scans detected activity in the portions of the brain that are also stimulated by food and sex.

Just why humans developed such a biologically based appreciation of music is still not clear. The appreciation of food and the drive for sex evolved to help the survival of the species, but "music did not develop strictly for survival purposes," Blood told Associated Press at the time.

She also believes that because music activates the parts of the brain that make us happy, this suggests it can benefit our physical and mental well being.

This is good news for patients undergoing surgical operations who experience anxiety in anticipation of those procedures.

Polish researcher, Zbigniew Kucharski, at the Medical Academy of Warsaw, studied the effect of acoustic therapy for fear management in dental patients. During the period from October 2001 to May 2002, 38 dental patients aged between 16 and 60 years were observed. The patients received variations of acoustic therapy, a practice where music is received via headphones and also vibrators.

Dr Kucharski discovered the negative feelings decreased five-fold for patients who received 30 minutes of acoustic therapy both before and after their dental procedure. For the group that heard and felt music only prior to the operation, the fearful feelings reduced by a factor of 1.6 only.

For the last group (the control), which received acoustic therapy only during the operation, there was no change in the degree of fear felt.

A 1992 study identified music listening and relaxation instruction as an effective way to reduce pain and anxiety in women undergoing painful gynecological procedures. And other studies have proved music can reduce other 'negative' human emotions like fear, distress and depression.

Sheri Robb and a team of researchers published a report in the Journal of Music Therapy in 1992, outlining their findings that music assisted relaxation procedures (music listening, deep breathing and other exercises) effectively reduced anxiety in pediatric surgical patients on a burn unit.

"Music," says Esther Mok in the AORN Journal in February 2003, "is an easily administered, non-threatening, non-invasive, and inexpensive tool to calm preoperative anxiety."

So far, according to the same report, researchers cannot be certain why music has a calming affect on many medical patients. One school of thought believes music may reduce stress because it can help patients to relax and also lower blood pressure. Another researcher claims music allows the body's vibrations to synchronize with the rhythms of those around it. For instance, if an anxious patient with a racing heartbeat listens to slow music, his heart rate will slow down and synchronize with the music's rhythm.

Such results are still something of a mystery. The incredible ability that music has to affect and manipulate emotions and the brain is undeniable, and yet still largely inexplicable.

Aside from brain activity, the affect of music on hormone levels in the human body can also be quantified, and there is definite evidence that music can lower levels of cortisol in the body (associated with arousal and stress), and raise levels of melatonin (which can induce sleep). It can also precipitate the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkiller.

But how does music succeed in prompting emotions within us? And why are these emotions often so powerful? The simple answer is that no one knows... yet. So far we can quantify some of the emotional responses caused by music, but we cannot yet explain them. But that's OK. I don't have to understand electricity to benefit from light when I switch on a lamp when I come into a room, and I don't have to understand why music can make me feel better emotionally. It just does - our Creator made us that way.

How to Make Professional Rap Beats in FL Studio in 4 Steps

,
MAKING MUSIC BEATS :

There are many factors that need to be taken into account if you wish to be successful at creating professional, industry standard beats in FL Studio. In this article I will touch on the key factors that you will need to master and this is what separates the pros from the amateurs when producing hot rap beats.

How to Make Professional Rap Beats in FL Studio in 4 Steps

Where to Start

Some people have a preference in what instrument they first want to layout when producing beats in FL Studio. Some prefer the melody, some prefer the bass line and some prefer the drums. No answer to this is wrong or right, and it is mostly a matter of opinion, but for starters I will recommend laying out a good drum pattern first.

Before we get started, set your BPM (beats per minute) to something between 85 and 95.

Creating the Drum Pattern

First, search through your sounds for a nice, hard-hitting kick sample. In the example that we're going to create, you'll want to try to find a kick sound that hits hard but does not contain a lot of low-end sub bass (this will make it easier to mix with the bass later). Once you have found a good drum kick sound, fill in the steps on the step sequencer of where you would like the kick to be heard. Now, right-click on the sound in the step sequencer and select "Send to piano roll." This will put your drum kick pattern in the piano roll where you will want to adjust your velocity. Velocity is what gives the sound a human feel and not so robotic. Technically, velocity is to adjust how hard something is hit, or how hard a string is plucked, a piano key is pressed, etc. Play with this a little bit until your drum kick pattern starts to sound more human and natural.

Next, find a hi-hat sound that you like and again, click the steps where you want the hi-hat to be. Generally, every other note on the step sequencer is a good place to start. Now, do the same thing that you did with the kick sound and send the channel to the piano roll and adjust the velocity. This is even more important on the hi-hat than it is with the kick.

Now for the snare drum(s). I usually like to layer a few together to get the sound just right. I usually like a tight and hard-hitting sound, so I might mix a clap sound with a rim shot and then take 2 different traditional snare hits and turn the level down a little bit on those and then pan one to the right and one to the left at about 35%. For starters, you'll want to put your snare drum on every 4th step in the step sequencer.

Now, you can add more personal touch if you want using the same techniques already mentioned. Feel free to throw in a cowbell, tambourine, cymbal, etc.

Creating the Bass Line

In most hip hop, a low bass sound is used so really all it provides is power and thump and possibly a catchy tune that helps to "glue" the drum sounds together with the rest of the instruments. Choose a low bass sound that will give a good rumble when being bumped, and if there is too much high-end frequency to the sound then you can always cut it out with proper EQ or low-pass filter. I usually like to have the bass frequency set at 50 to 75hz and have the kick set at about 85 to 90 hz. You can also do this in reverse (have the kick lower frequency than the bass). The most important thing is that they don't both occupy the SAME frequency space. This is where most amateur beat makers struggle. It can take a lot of practice to mix the drum kick and the bass line together so that they don't sound weird or cause distortion when they're on top of each other. This will probably be the last thing that you master when learning to make beats because it can take precise EQ and compression to make it sound crisp and professional.

When writing the bass melody, start out simple. Choose a note scale that you want to use and stay within that scale. If you don't know music theory, start out by researching scales and pick one at random. Next, put a blank sound (use a sampler channel, or just turn the volume all the way down on the sound) in your step sequencer in fruity loops. Right click it and open the piano roll. Fill in all the notes in that scale, in every octave, and drag the edge of them so that they show up for the whole duration of the full pattern. Now, open the piano roll for your bass and click the little piano icon in the top left corner of the window. Select view > Ghost Channels. Now every note in the scale will be highlighted gray and you know to stay in these notes while writing your melody. This is a tip you really don't want to ignore because it can help you a lot!

Writing the Main Melody

First, choose your instrument. Let's pick something simple like a piano. Write a melody that goes along with the bass line. Sometimes you can copy your same bass line but then add more notes in between (remember I said to keep your bass line simple). If you have researched some music theory, you should use some chords here and there and use some type of chord progression. Remember to stay in the scale and always view Ghost Channels to make sure you're in the scale in you're unsure. If you want to stay simple you can just have the piano playing for the melody, but feel free to select a couple other complimentary instruments and add some accents here and there. Sometimes I like to use something like a violin just to emphasize certain notes or phrases in the melody.

Writing the Hook

The hook is where you can really go wild because it is the most climactic part of the song. You still want to stay in the correct scale of course, but you can add lots of strings and other instruments. You should either elaborate on the normal verse melody and make it more complex or you should write a totally new melody in the same scale. Remember to try to picture it with vocals on top of it and try to add things that will compliment a finished product / song.

Make Beats Online and Unlock the Secret to Easily Creating Professional Quality Backing Tracks

Getting your musical ideas down on tape, as it were, used to mean going to a studio and spending mountains of cash to be able to record for a few hours, maybe get your music the way you wanted it, and then have to wait until you could save up enough money to hire the studio again to mix down your music and get it in a form you can use. When computers started to change that in the past few years, you still had to download massive programmes that took up lots of space on your computer and then you had to either create or gather from various places the samples you wanted to include in your music, spending hours digging around or preparing to generate your beats.

Online services have changed all that! These services have everything you need to accomplish your musical goals. All you have to do now is sign up for a service, grab the sounds you want to include and use their software to generate your backing tracks. No more digging around for samples, downloading confusing software, or wondering what your music is going to sound like and when you are use it.

Most of these services have a huge bank of samples from which you can choose your sound elements. The sequencer provided works right in your browser and is extremely user friendly. Sightseeing: New York's Finest!

,
MAKING MUSIC BEATS :

Four Buildings, two Museums, one Bridge and a Station

Sightseeing: New York's Finest!

If you only have days in New York, these are the places to see.

Rockefeller Center
Between Fifth & Seventh Avenues and 47th Street & 52nd Street

Urban architects have tried to imitate the scale and complexity of the Rockefeller Center ever since it was built in the '30s, but no one has ever succeeded. It covers two entire city blocks! People hang about the pedestrian spaces between the Maison Francaise and the British Empire Buildings, looking down on the ice-skating rink, which in summer is used as a café. Sunset is the best time to visit, as the views accompanying the cocktails at the elegant Rainbow Room can be spectacular. The famous art deco Radio City Music Hall is situated on the western side of the complex.

Empire State Building
350 Fifth Avenue, at 34th Street

The top of the Empire State Building is legendary both in movies and in life. Taking this trip is one of New York's highlights. The road travelled goes a bit like this... take a high-speed lift up to the 80th floor in under a minute. Take a second lift to the 86th floor. Queue again to continue to the 102nd storey, where there's a 360-degree view with 50-mile/80-km visibility on a clear day. Think of innovator, Douglas Leigh, the man who worked out how to bathe the tower in different coloured lights using plastic sheets and coloured gels. Try to visit the Empire State Building at sunset when the place is less crowded. You can watch the city lighting up: the view is particularly stunning at dusk.

Chrysler Building
405 Lexington Avenue, at 42nd Street

New Yorker's have a great fondness for this magnificent building. Although you can't visit its luminous pinnacle - made of stainless steel arches and shaped like a '30s Chrysler car's radiator cap - you can visit the fabulous art deco lobby of red and brown marble and chrome, with original inlaid wooden elevator doors and a painted ceiling. The façade of white brick is decorated with designs taken from automobile hubcaps. Another romantic New York hotspot: particularly at sunset.

United Nations Headquarters
First Avenue, at East 46th Street

The Modernist headquarters of the United Nations is also an excellent example of '50s architecture. Built by a committee of international architects that included Le Corbusier (who eventually renounced any association with the final design) there are three main buildings on the 17-acre/7 hectare site by the East River, plus a library added in the '60s. You can visit the foyer and basement of the General Assembly building alone, but to see any of the council rooms and the General Assembly itself, you must take a tour.

Brooklyn Bridge
Probably the most famous and breathtaking bridge in the world; the Brooklyn Bridge was a massive undertaking. It took over 600 men, some 16 years to build and when completed in 1883 was the world's largest suspension bridge - and the first to be constructed of steel. This bridge is a popular film location, used as a backdrop for films like 'Saturday Night Fever' and 'Mo' Better Blues'. Although you might have seen it on celluloid; nothing beats the wonder of standing on it for the very first time.

Metropolitan Museum of Art
Fifth Avenue, at 82nd Street

New Yorkers regard this Museum as home-away-from-home during the winter months. Spending endless hours pouring over the art: then retiring to the café for something warm. This treasure trove of 1.4 million square feet of galleries is virtually impossible to do in a single afternoon, but don't be put off: the art you will see cannot be viewed anywhere else. Friday evenings are particularly pleasant. Relax in splendid surroundings, enjoy a cocktail, and listen to a string quartet.

Museum of Modern Art
11 West 53rd Street, between Fifth $ Sixth Avenues

A storehouse of some of the world's most exciting and contemporary art of the twentieth century, the Museum of Modern Art houses some of the most significant modern paintings, drawings and sculpture. The collection has grown to include 150,000 paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs, architectural models and drawings, and design objects. MoMA also owns some 22,000 films, videos, and media works, as well as film stills, scripts, posters and historical documents.

Solomon R Guggenheim Museum
1071 Fifth Avenue, at 88th Street

In 1943, iconoclast architect, Frank Lloyd Wright drew a citrus press, and submitted it to the New York building authorities. 16 years later, this innovative and remarkable design came into being, commissioned by Solomon R Guggenheim to house his notable collection of works by modern artists. It was completed six months after Wright died. The cylindrical design of this building and use of volume and space make it one of Wright's masterpieces. In January 1990, a new gallery building - designed by Gwathmey & Associates, based on a plan by Wright - was built and opened too much fanfare. The Guggenheim also has a downtown branch in SoHo that is well worth visiting and stays open late.

Grand Central Station

If you're looking for old-world romance, the most legendary of New York's romantic havens has to be Grand Central Station. Its faded elegance only adds to the ambience its magnificent origins provide. Once a hubbub of city life - before the airlines took business from the railroads - this Beax-Arts building, which dates from 1903, was once the heart of New York. Inside is still marvelous: the enormous vaulted ceiling is decorated with the constellations of the Zodiac. For great dining views; check out Michael Jordan's Steak House on the west side of the concourse and Metrazur on the east. The Vanderbilt Hall often hosts visiting art exhibits and other events. Take a moment to stand on the platform and envisage elegant days gone by. How great it is to be in New York!
